Gregorian Chant By Greg Lockhart Every mayor needs a right-hand man, or in my case, a four-pawed sidekick. Enter Mayzie, our Boykin Spaniel,
office or down to Jacksonville, she rides shotgun, nose pressed to the air vent, ears flapping like flags of approval. When the workday is done, she doesn’t punch out—she clocks in for night duty, curling against my legs on the couch or in bed and sometimes climbing up on the pillow above my head like a warm, snoring crown. I never thought I’d share leadership with a Boykin Spaniel, but truthfully, she may be more popular than the mayor. But even the FDOSM can’t control the weather. After a bone-dry July that had me mowing dust instead of grass, August seems determined to balance the scales with daily downpours. Rain has become the soundtrack of the month, tapping the roof, flooding ditches, and turning my yard into something resembling the Okefenokee Swamp. My normal weekend routines—mowing, edging, and tackling the four lawns I’m responsible for—have been washed away in the tide of August showers. With the rain ruining my mowing schedule, I looked for indoor tasks to keep from going stir-crazy. That’s how I found myself last weekend replacing my father in-law’s garage door opener. Simple project, right? Take down the old one, put up the new one. That’s what I thought, until we drove to Brunswick to buy the model we wanted. There were three boxes in stock. All three had been opened and taped back together like a kindergarten art project. It was as if every curious shopper in Glynn County had taken a peek inside and shoved the parts back in like a jigsaw puzzle. Of course, I picked the least mangled one, only to discover that a few small but critical parts had wandered off, including a clevis pin. For the record, a clevis pin is a little metal piece worth about fifty cents, but without it the whole operation is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
Fortunately, I was able to improvise a replacement, though I had to dig through every drawer and coffee can of spare bolts and washers in the garage to find something that would work. After a fair amount of grumbling, ladder-climbing, and creative engineering, the opener went up, and I pressed the remote with the confidence of a man about to unveil his masterpiece. The door lifted smoothly. Victory! At least it was a productive indoor project, which meant I didn’t have to battle mosquitoes, lightning, or knee deep puddles in the yard. Meanwhile, Mayzie supervised the entire process from her usual post. She has an uncanny knack for lying right where you’re about to step, forcing you into an awkward ballet of tiptoes and sidesteps to avoid disaster. She didn’t fetch tools, but she did keep morale high, which is all you can ask from an FDOSM on a rainy Sunday. So, while August may have drowned out my mowing schedule, it hasn’t washed away the small victories. The grass is long, but the garage door works. The project house is soggy, but the First Dog of St. Marys remains firmly in command of her kingdom. When the rain finally lets up, I’ll be back outside riding the mower across four lawns, probably with Mayzie watching from the window. Until then, I’ll be grateful for our little dog who reminds me that some days are better spent indoors, curled up against the rain, with the First Dog snoring on the pillow above your head.
better known around town as the First Dog of St. Marys—FDOSM for short. She’s small in size but big in sass, a fluffy bundle of brown curls who thinks City Hall belongs to her just as much as it does to me. Some mayors get bodyguards; I get a dog that demands belly rubs from everyone who enters her presence. Most mornings, Mayzie and I make our first stop at City Hall. While I take a moment to say hello to everyone that is in our office area, Mayzie immediately heads to Kimberly for her morning treat that she knows is kept in Kimberly’s desk. Any delay in receiving her rawhide treat will be met with some very vocal noises to make sure Kimberly knows what she wants. Once she has achieved her objective and received her treat, she makes a beeline for her University of Georgia dog bed in my office. But if anyone comes into the executive office area, she is quick to jump up and see who it is, often offering a vocal hello. If anyone forgets to greet her, she lets out a little huff—half sigh, half protest—that makes it clear she’ll be filing a formal complaint. Afterward, we head to the print shop to start the rest of our workday. Mayzie considers herself upper management. She supervises me from the floor, occasionally shifting positions to make sure I don’t slack off. When we travel to our Fernandina

The Saw Palmetto: Nature’s Healer Beneath canopies of pine and oak across the Southeastern United States, the rugged, fan-leaved saw palmetto thrives. For centuries, this palm has played a central role in the region’s ecology, traditional medicine, and cultural lore. Below, we explore the saw palmetto’s story of resilience and healing. in poultices to reduce inflammation and swelling. Its nutritional content made it a survival food, as well, despite its strong flavor, often described as bitter, acrid, or even soapy. As European settlers observed the plant’s resilience and usefulness among native populations, it made its way into early American folk medicine. By the late 1800s, physicians prescribed saw palmetto tinctures for a wide range of conditions, including prostate enlargement, testicular atrophy, chronic bronchitis, digestive complaints, and even wasting diseases such as tuberculosis. By the early twentieth century, saw palmetto was a sought-after ingredient in over-the-counter medications. Drug companies in the United States and Europe incorporated it into syrups, capsules, and extracts marketed for men’s health even into the 1930s and 1940s. However, after World War II, modern pharmaceuticals largely eclipsed traditional herbal remedies in the United States. Meanwhile in Europe, particularly in Germany and France, saw palmetto continued to be studied and prescribed into the late twentieth century. Clinical trials confirmed that saw palmetto extracts could reduce symptoms of prostate enlargement with fewer side effects than conventional drugs. With the natural health revival of the 1990s and early 2000s, saw palmetto reemerged in the United States as a top-selling herbal supplement. It remains one of the most commonly-used botanicals for supporting male urological health, particularly for managing BPH symptoms. Beyond its medicinal value, the saw palmetto holds cultural significance in the South. It is a symbol of resilience and endurance due to its ability to withstand harsh conditions – including drought and fire – and its resistance to most insects. Its image adorns state parks, nature preserves, and even the Florida state seal.

Saw palmettos at Cumberland Island’s maritime forest
The saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is native to the Southeastern United States, with dense populations throughout Florida, South Georgia, and parts of South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. With a low-growing, shrubby form and sharply serrated leaf stems—hence the name “saw” palmetto—this plant is perfectly adapted to survive fire, drought, and nutrient-poor soils. Some colonies of saw palmetto are believed to be thousands of years old, making them among the oldest living plant organisms in the world. Saw palmetto fronds were useful to Native Americans and early American colonists for weaving baskets and making ropes and brooms. Populations on nearby Cumberland Island used them over the centuries, too; the local Timucua tribe, early British settlers, and newly-freed enslaved people all employed them to roof their shelters. This palm’s fruit – which ripen from green to a dark purplish-black in late summer and early fall – are an important food source for black bears, wild turkeys, pollinators, and other mammals and birds. On Cumberland Island, it is vital in the diets of deer and raccoons. However, saw palmettos are probably best known for their medicinal properties. Long before European settlers arrived, Native American tribes in the Southeast, including the Seminole, Creek, and Timucua used the berries to treat a variety of ailments. Their most well-documented use was as a tonic for male reproductive and urinary issues. Healers administered dried or fresh berries to treat urinary tract inflammation, impotence, and conditions likely related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—a use that would later catch the attention of modern pharmacologists. In addition, Native Americans employed saw palmetto as a general tonic to boost strength and vitality and

The renewed demand for saw palmetto has brought attention to the need for sustainable harvesting. Because it grows slowly and is an important food for wildlife, berry collection can disrupt local ecosystems. In Florida, where the vast majority of saw palmetto berry harvesting occurs, the state has implemented regulations requiring a permit for berry collection. Throughout its history, the saw palmetto has proven it is both a healer and a survivor. Whether you pass it on a trail or find it bottled in the supplement aisle, this hardy palm is a reminder of how traditional knowledge and modern science can meet. running a shop or the hassle of Facebook sales. Some of the things we’d love to see include:
• Concrete planters and statues • Trellises • Potting benches • Raised beds • Ceramic garden accents • Water and fire features
We’re not your traditional landscaping company—in fact, we’re the opposite. And we couldn’t be more excited to grow with you.
Hi, I’m Erin Welsh, owner of River Tides Landscape Services and our newest venture, River Tides Outdoor Emporium. Like many of you, when I first moved here I struggled to keep plants alive. My career had always been in technology, not gardening, and I couldn’t believe I was failing so badly after
having some success with plants in other climates. I wanted someone to help me create a vision—an actual design—for an outdoor space I could work toward. In stead, I spent a year and a half calling companies who didn’t show up, or who disappeared after the first visit.
When it comes to landscaping projects, we make sure there are options for everyone. You can choose a full installation with us, spread projects out over time, or even take a DIY approach. No matter your budget, we can build a plan that works. Now for the really exciting part: this fall, we’re opening River Tides Outdoor Emporium in downtown St. Marys! The Emporium will be a garden design center where you’ll find plants that actually work in our environment, along with the education and support to help you succeed with them. We’ll also host classes, workshops, and community events. Beyond plants, you’ll discover high-quality garden tools, organic products, planters, accessories, and more. And my favorite part—we’re opening our doors to local craftspeople. If you’re a carpenter, mason, potter, concrete finisher, metalworker, or even a creative DIYer, we’d love for you to be part of the Emporium. Bring your ideas, and even use our reclaimed materials to create unique pieces. We want to give local artists a place to showcase and sell their work—without the overhead of
Eventually, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I started taking classes and quickly fell in love with the science behind plants—botany, horticulture, the whole world of how things grow. It pulled me in completely, and I realized I had found my next career. I still learn something new every day, and I don’t plan on stopping. So, what is River Tides? It’s always evolving. What it looks like today won’t be the same five years from now, and that’s the exciting part. At its heart, River Tides believes landscaping should be smart, sustainable, and simple. Our mission is to create beautiful, low-maintenance outdoor spaces that honor the local environment, repurpose materials with purpose, and serve our community with integrity. We design with intention—choosing plants that thrive here, minimizing maintenance, and creating resilient spaces that support pollinators like bees, butterflies, humming birds, and other beneficial insects. We believe just as much in how we treat people as how we treat the land. That means respecting clients, employees, and partners, showing up when we say
