“I just want you to know that if you are out there and you are being really hard on yourself right now for something that has happened ... it’s normal. That is what is going to happen to you in life. Gregorian Chant By Greg Lockhart The rst day of standard time, the time we return to when daylight saving time ends, is coming to a close as I write this
In less than 4 hours, we had demolished and cleared the debris, placing it into the dumpster. Another hour of cleaning rotten wood and other items left behind on the property and the dumpster was packed full, over owing even. Now, I have to stop here and point out just how amazing this was. Many of you know, and I believe I have written about it before, about how long I have kept a dumpster while working on our current home. I believe we had one for over 10 months one time. So, to have lled this dumpster completely in less than 5 hours was unbelievable. I almost still can’t believe it as I am typing this. You know that I am no longer a spring chicken at 59 years of age and the Bride’s brothers are 70 and 69 years of age. (Years of age doesn’t really sound right to me but it is better than saying we are old!) So, this was an accomplishment that I am proud of, the four of us (the Bride was right there helping to ll the dumpster) certainly got way more done working together than the Bride and I could have done in 3 or 4 weekends. I could certainly carry on about how a few people working together can accomplish much more than an individual and I could use that analogy to encourage you all to get involved in some sort of community service organization to help make a difference in our community, but I have beat that drum before. What I will say is how thankful I am that David and Joe came down to help us. They helped us take a signi cant step forward on our project. And while we all felt pretty tired and worn out at the end of our short workday, I think we all bounced back pretty well the next day. With the bulk of our planned work nished on Saturday, this allowed the Bride and I to enjoy our coffee on Sunday morning. We did nd a little motivation to accomplish a few more tasks in the afternoon following church and nished up the day with a family dinner. Then the Bride unknowingly gave me a little piece of inspiration when she told her family we were going to head back to our house to “mourn the passing of the weekend”. Most of the time, we work so hard on the weekend that I am glad to go back to work on Monday morning. Even though we worked hard and got a lot accomplished this past weekend, I would have to agree that I am sorry to see this particular weekend end as well. Achieving a goal
and making signi cant progress has a way of making all your efforts seem worthwhile. Her brothers have promised to return next month for another workday, and I am looking forward to it. But right now, I am mourning the start of the workweek ahead. FUN FACTS! THE WORLD’S LARGEST WATERFALL IS UNDERWATER Yes, there are waterfalls under the ocean. At the Denmark Strait, the cold water from the Nordic Sea is denser than the Irminger Sea’s warm water, making it drop almost two miles down at 123 million cubic feet per second.
column. I have written before about my preference to stay on daylight saving time, something that the Bride and I don’t agree upon. I just like having extra daylight after work or later in the day on the weekend. And to be clear, because the Bride often points out this fact, I realize the amount of daytime or daylight does not change when we switch back and forth between standard and daylight saving time, but it does change the time of day when it is occurring. The rst day of standard time was actually pretty good for me. I admit that I had forgotten that the time was changing this past weekend. When I got up on Sunday morning, the Bride had already been up for a little bit. I got my rst cup of coffee, topped off her cup, and we decided to watch some shows we had recorded earlier in the week. When the rst show was over, I looked at my watch to see that it wasn’t even eight o’clock yet. My smart watch had automatically made the time adjustment. I was surprised when the Bride reminded me of the time change, and pleasantly so because we had time to relax a bit longer before church. Saturday had been a big day. We got a fairly early start that morning on a signi cant project…as Chip Gaines would say “It’s demo day!” Two of the Bride’s brothers were in town to help us with our renovation project. Progress had been slow over the past several weeks as we always had to take time to watch the Bulldogs play on Saturdays. But with Georgia having the 3:30 game, we had 5 or 6 hours to devote to our rst major demo task at the new project – the removal of the old wheelchair ramp and attached pergola on the front of the house. A new dumpster had been delivered and it sat empty, beckoning to be lled. And that is exactly what we did.

Turning 65?
Maybe you have noticed it: the ash of brilliant orange wings itting by before gently alighting on a nearby nectar bush. This is a sign that monarch butter ies are on the move. As they make their massive fall migration south, you may spot them in Southeast Georgia. Below, learn more about these
Around March when northerly migration commences, monarchs in Mexico become sexually mature and mate. The males then die, while the females head north, depositing eggs on milkweed plants along the way. These females eventually die themselves, and their offspring continue the northward migration. It takes three to ve generations to repopulate the United States and southern Canada. Finally, the last generation of the year hatches and begins the return journey to overwintering grounds in Mexico. A single monarch can travel hundreds or even thousands of miles. The recapture of marked butter ies has revealed they can travel as far as eighty miles in one day. The longest distance recorded for the complete ight of a single migrant monarch butter y is 1,870 miles. Although scientists believe North American monarchs have been making their remarkable annual journey for thousands of years, threats to their habitat and food sources are making this migration more difficult. Habitat destruction in areas where they spend the winter has taken a massive toll. In their summer habitats, herbicides kill both native nectar plants where adult monarchs feed as well as the milkweed their caterpillars need as host plants. Insecticides kill the monarchs themselves. Since the 1990s, the monarch population has declined by approximately ninety percent, placing them on the endangered species list. How can you help? Plant pesticide-free native milkweed in your yard so that monarch butter ies can lay their eggs and the caterpillars have food to eat. The species of milkweed native to southeast Georgia is “Large ower Milkweed,” or Asclepias connivens. Planting locally native species is the best way to help monarchs; the butter ies have coevolved with native plants, and their life cycles are in sync with each other. Visit nwf.org/nativeplant nder to nd other plants native to our area and the wildlife they support. The monarch butter y’s migration is one of the greatest phenomena in the natural world. Scientists still are not sure how migrating monarchs know where to go when each individual has never made the

delicate insects and their incredible journey.
Monarch butter ies, which are found across North America, are iconic for their distinctive deep orange coloring with black veining and bodies. This acts as a “Don’t Eat Me” sign, alerting predators the insect is poisonous. Monarchs’ toxicity comes from milkweed, the caterpillars’ only food source. As they feed, the caterpillars store up toxins in their body, which remain in their system even into adulthood. Although an animal which eats a monarch butter y usually does not die, it feels sick enough to avoid eating them in the future. Most adult monarchs only live a few weeks as they search for food in the form of ower nectar, for mates, and for milkweed on which to lay their eggs. The last generation to hatch in late summer delays sexual maturity – living as long as eight months – to undertake a spectacular fall migration, one of the few insects to do so.

The great monarch migration. Worldwildlife.org
From September to early October, millions of these insects begin their southerly fall migration from as far north as southern Canada. Monarchs in the east travel down the Atlantic coast, with many stopping at Florida’s Panhandle (St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge in this area is optimal for viewing migrating monarchs, as they are attracted to its saltbushes). They then y over the Gulf Coast to central Mexico, nearly 2,500 miles from their starting point. Some estimates say up to a billion butter ies arrive in Mexico each year. There in the r forests of Mexico’s mountains, they hibernate for the winter in sheltered sites, particularly on trees, where they cluster on trunks and big branches. These international travelers return to the
